1-Year IDI Update

Background

In June 2022, 36 York Federal Fellows alumni–nonprofit executives from across York County–participated in taking the Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI), an online assessment that provides a reliable measure of intercultural competence along the Intercultural Development Curriculum.

The White Rose Leadership Institute (WRLI) offered this assessment, with financial support from the York County Community Foundation, in order to establish a baseline of intercultural competence among the York County nonprofit community and to develop an Intercultural Development plan that provides a blueprint for developing cultural proficiency.

The group of 36 nonprofit leaders’ Developmental Orientation Score was 100.82, in the orientation of Minimization.

The Developmental Opportunity for this group was as follows:

Your group may struggle to bridge across diverse communities when differences need to be more deeply understood and acted upon. Your task is to develop a deeper understanding of your own culture—cultural self-awareness—and increased understanding of culture general and culture specific frameworks for making sense of and more fully attending to cultural differences.

The Inheritance Project

To support the prescribed Developmental Opportunity, WRLI offered–with financial support from The Powder Mill Foundation–a daylong “Unpack Your Inheritance” Workshop, followed by a 6-week Inclusive Leadership Immersion with The Inheritance Project from January to April in order to develop greater understanding of self and others through the concepts of inheritance and the 5Cs of Identity (Country, Culture, Creed, Color and Class).

Check out a debrief and impact results presentation of that program here.

One-Year IDI Check-In

Of the 24 leaders that participated in The Inheritance Project, 11 opted to retake the IDI in July 2023. That group’s DO score in 2022 was 94.19.

Upon retaking the IDI in July 2023, that group of 11 leaders who participated in The Inheritance Project’s DO score was 106.52, an increase of 12.33 points.

Additionally, five leaders who did not participate in The Inheritance Project programming also retook the IDI in July 2023.

In July 2022, that group’s DO score was 101.61.

Upon retaking the IDI in July 2023, that group of 5 leaders who did not participate in The Inheritance Project’s DO score was 104.31, an increase of 2.7 points.

What’s Next?

All respondents will receive their individual assessment results, as well as their individual Intercultural Development Plans.

The group’s Developmental Opportunity remains the same:

Your group may struggle to bridge across diverse communities when differences need to be more deeply understood and acted upon. Your task is to develop a deeper understanding of your own culture—cultural self-awareness—and increased understanding of culture general and culture specific frameworks for making sense of and more fully attending to cultural differences.

WRLI is committed to continuing programming and opportunities for the York County nonprofit community to increase their Intercultural Competence. We have received a grant from the Racial Equity Fund at the York County Community Foundation to offer continued group coaching in this area.
