Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI)

What is Intercultural Competence?

Intercultural competence is the ability to function effectively across cultures, to think and act appropriately, and to communicate and work with people from different cultural backgrounds – at home or abroad. These concepts apply equally to individuals, teams and entire organizations.

How is Intercultural Competence Measured?

Intercultural competence can be measured by the Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI), a 50-question online assessment. It’s considered a cross-culturally generalizable, valid and reliable measure of intercultural competence that does not contain cultural bias.

How can I (and others on my team) take the IDI?

The White Rose Leadership Institute is a Qualified Administrator of the IDI and can lead you through the process from start to finish.

Why Use the IDI

  • Valid & Quantifiable
The IDI allows extensive and in-depth insights on individual and group levels of intercultural competence. This is accomplished through sophisticated, customized IDI Individual Profile Reports, IDI Group Profile Reports and IDI Group Administrator Reports. These reports present valid, quantitative information about how an individual or group engages cultural difference in their day-to-day interactions with others.

  • Wide Application
    (1) for individual feedback and development of intercultural competence, (2) for group/team feedback and training development of intercultural competence, and (3) for baseline assessments and organizational development.

  • Actionable
The IDI produces a customized, Intercultural Development Plan (IDP) for each individual that guides the person through a series of activities and self-reflections that developmentally build intercultural competence.

The IDI is used by U.S. and governmental organizations, colleges and universities, corporations, nonprofit organizations, and primary and secondary schools.
