Fall 2020 Nonprofit COVID Survey

From October 8-13, 2020, the White Rose Leadership Institute conducted a survey via SurveyMonkey to check back in with the 305 participating Give Local York organizations to assess the situations and needs of the York County nonprofit community since the start of the pandemic.

Executive Summary

COVID and Operations:

  • 50.8% of organizations report High levels of disruption, including:

    • 100% of animals-focused organizations

    • 54.17% of arts, culture & humanities organizations

    • 54.17% of education organizations

  • 44.9% report Moderate levels of disruption.

  • 4.2% report Little or No disruption.

  • 8.4% have been forced to suspend operations entirely.

    • Of those forced to suspend operations, 

      • 37.2% are faith-based organizations

      • 32.6% are arts, culture and humanities organizations

      • 27.9% are animals-focused organizations

  • 38.7% are working remotely.

  • 29.4% are operating onsite to provide essential services.

  • The biggest impacts on operations have been:

    • Cancellation of fundraising events (79.66%)

    • Cancellation of programs (70.34%)

    • Changing in-person events to virtual events (68.64%)

    • Loss of volunteer workforce (55.08%)

    • Challenges of staff/volunteers working remotely (51.69%)

COVID and Fundraising:

  • 69% of organizations have experienced a drop in funding

    • 20.51% a drop of 1-20%

    • 25.64% a drop of 21-50%

    • 23.08% a drop of 51% or higher

      • 50% of animals-related organizations

      • 30% of education organizations

  • 31% report no change or an increase in funding (mostly due to recovery funds)

  • 78% of organizations anticipate a drop in funding over the next 12 months

    • 14.66% anticipate a drop of 51% or more

      • 33.3% of animals-related organizations

      • 21.74% of arts, culture and humanities organizations

  • 22% anticipate no change or an increase in funding


What Organizations need most right now:

  • Financial support that is flexible to respond to the varying and uncertain needs of the current environment, including the loss of revenue/income, different ways of operating, and the ability to maintain staff and infrastructure for future recovery (86.84%)

  • Developing new partnerships and coordination to meet community needs (51.75%)


How can funders help?

  • General operating support instead of specific project funding (81.51%)

  • Simplifying/Minimizing grant application requirements and follow up reporting (63.03%)

  • Flexibility to use currently restricted funds wherever most needed (35.29%)

  • Increased and Expedited funding to meet immediate and/or emergency needs (35.29%)
