Fall 2021 Nonprofit COVID Survey

From October 10-November 7, 2021, the White Rose Leadership Institute conducted a survey via SurveyMonkey to check back in with the 302 participating Give Local York organizations to assess the situations and needs of the York County nonprofit community since the start of the pandemic.

Executive Summary

COVID and Operations:

  • 31.94%% of organizations still report High levels of disruption, including:

    • 35% of human/social service-focused organizations

    • 55.56% of arts, culture & humanities organizations

    • 66.67% of faith-based organizations

  • 52.78% report Moderate levels of disruption.

  • 15.28% report Little or No disruption.

  • 2.8% have been forced to suspend operations entirely.

    • Of those forced to suspend operations, 22% are arts, culture and humanities organizations.

  • 38.9% are working remotely.

  • The biggest impacts on operations have been:

    • Cancellation of fundraising events (72%)

    • Loss of volunteer workforce (59%)

    • Challenges of staff/volunteers working remotely (58%)

    • Changing in-person events to virtual events (58%)

    • Cancellation of programs (53%)

COVID and Fundraising:

  • 60% of organizations have experienced a drop in funding

    • 22% a drop of 1-20%

    • 30% a drop of 21-50%

    • 8% a drop of 51% or higher

      • 25% of animals-related organizations

      • 6% of human/social service organizations

  • 40% report no change or an increase in funding (mostly due to recovery funds)

  • 40% of organizations anticipate a drop in funding over the next 12 months

    • 3% anticipate a drop of 51% or more

      • 12.5% of arts, culture and humanities organizations

      • 3% of human/social service organizations

  • 56% anticipate no change or an increase in funding


What Organizations need most right now:

  • Financial support that is flexible to respond to the varying and uncertain needs of the current environment, including the loss of revenue/income, different ways of operating, and the ability to maintain staff and infrastructure for future recovery (81%)

  • Developing new partnerships and coordination to meet community needs (49%)


How can funders help?

  • General operating support instead of specific project funding (80%)

  • Simplifying/Minimizing grant application requirements and follow up reporting (54%)

  • Increased and Expedited funding to meet immediate and/or emergency needs (39%)

  • Flexibility to use currently restricted funds wherever most needed (38%)
